Our Trip To India 2007

Sri Lanka

February 2007. We boarded a plane from Heathrow to Colombo in Sri-Lanka, where after finally getting through customs we got on an old rickety bus and were taken to a wonderful hotel where there was Geckos crawling all over the walls.

The beach was amazing, the sea was warm and coconut trees were blowing in the wind.

The tables for dinner were full of every sort of rice dish, meats and loads of other food that we have never seen or tasted before.

Another early start the next morning where we got on a smaller plane to Goa with a small stop in Male, in the Maldives, where unfortunately all we could do was look out the plane windows, but hey ... at least we can say we've been to the Maldives!!

Landing at Dabolim airport and more customs to get through to a waiting taxi that drove us an hour through the streets of Goa, with the unforgettable sights, sounds and smells.   How many people can you fit on a moped ?   In India, as many as you can !!     And the biggest vehicles seem to have the right of way, whichever way that is !!

Baga Beach has the softest sands I have ever walked upon, some of the nicest people and probably the hottest sun. With sun beds lining the beach and the shacks set back from the sea, this is one of the most peaceful places to relax in.

The streets of Goa were dusty and lined with various market stalls.

A hot two hour jeep drive to one of the highest waterfalls in the world, on the border of Goa and Karnataka.
Driving in the jeep through the jungle and rivers you can see and hear the sights of the wildlife sanctuary.
DUDHSAGAR FALLS
The waterfalls plunge 2000 feet down into the wooded mountains of the Western Ghats, located in a blissful tropical jungle with crisscrossing streams.
Along the top of the mountain runs a railway track.
The fall overlooks a  steep, crescent shaped valley covered with beautiful tropical forest, in which live monkeys, birds, bees and butterflies. In the pool under the falls live plenty of aquatic life.
ARAMBOL BEACH
We went on a boat trip to go fishing and to a mud bath. We stopped in the middle of the sea to do some fishing and i was sick over the side of the boat !! Then I caught a fish.

When we arrived at the mud baths, we had to scrape the mud of big rocks and rub it on our skin, then we swam in the lake to wash it all off.

A day trip out on a boat to Arambol Beach where we were going to visit the natural mud baths and swim in the fresh water lakes that are just yards away from the beach.

After a small trek through a jungle we came to a mud bath, which wasn't actually a bath of mud but more like a large rocky pool where we had to scrape the mud of the rocks to cover our skin, and soak it off after the walk back to the lake.

The boat stopped in the middle of the sea where we spent some time fishing with a line attached to a coconut shell as a handle.

CROCODILE HUNTING DOWN THE MANDOVI RIVER
A boat trip down the Mandovi river where the banks are thick with Mangrove trees. Crocodiles inhabit the swamps and we were lucky enough to see several.  We saw lots of birds including eagles and herons.
There was lots of colourful birds, and we saw several crocodiles.
Along the river there was a palace and a shipwreck.
