Sir Goldsworthy Gurney  (Cornish inventor)  was inspired by Richard Trevithick to become an inventor.  Richard Trevithick was a British inventor who invented the high pressure steam engine.
He also built the first railway steam locomotive in 1801, on a site in Camborne.  He named it the Puffing Billy.
In February 1804 the worlds first locomotive - hauled railway journey took place near Merthyr Tydfil in Wales.  Trevithick's steam locomotive pulled a train along a tramway.
